What Is Good Advice?

A photo of houseplants through someone's kitchen window. Block white text overtop reads, "WHAT IS GOOD ADVICE?"

How do you know if you’re getting good advice?

Here are some of the signs I’ve noticed:

  • You’re grateful to receive it

  • It’s limiting in a desirable way (creative constraints)

  • It feels validating to some part of you, even if it’s not what you expected to hear

  • It’s delivered in kindness, without judgment, and with your best interest at heart

  • You feel seen and considered

  • It encourages the best in you

  • It honours your agency and discernment (pointed without being prescriptive)

  • You have access to more energy (or more of yourself in some way) on the other side of receiving it

  • You are able and willing to act on it, right now

Good advice is anticipated, relevant, and useful. You consented to receive it, it’s applicable to your situation/life, and you can do something with it immediately.

At its heart, I find good advice to be liberatory. It frees us up to be more of ourselves, to grow toward what matters to us, and to take aligned action. It creates expansion and movement.
