Are You Resisting the Wrong Thing?

Plain text on green background reads, “Language doesn’t just make things—it assembles, cobbles together, entire worlds and all the relations within.” — ANNE GALLOWAY

Are you resisting the thing, or are you resisting your definition of it?

Do you not want a newsletter, or do you not want what you’ve been told a newsletter should be?

Are you resisting writing, or are you resisting the style you think you have to write in?

Are you avoiding marketing, or are you avoiding what you think marketing means?

Do you hate selling, or do you hate the way you see other people sell?

We avoid so many things purely because of the language we use and the meaning we attach to it.

If you've decided you want to do something and you're having trouble getting started, check whether you actually resonate with the language you're using to describe it. What meaning or expectations have you attached to it?

Then, choose language and create definitions that work for YOU.

Don't like "newsletter"? Try mailer, digital postcard, bulletin, dispatch, weekly note... And get clear on your preferences around content, purpose, length, format, and frequency.

Don't like "marketing"? What about sharing? Informing? Inviting? Connecting?

You don't have to adopt someone else's idea of a thing. You can create your own.

Words create worlds. Choose the ones you want to live in.

— Kate

P.S. I looked up 'words create worlds' before publishing this—it's attributed to Rabbi Abraham Joshua Heschel.
